Before we pick up a screwdriver, we need to meet the 'family' of components that make up a security system. Think of an alarm system like a human body: it has a brain that makes decisions, eyes that watch for movement, and a voice that shouts when something is wrong. In this lesson, we’ll identify each part and explain its specific 'job' in keeping a building safe.
To build a professional system, you need the right gear. You don't need a heavy workshop, but you do need a few specialised tools—like a multimeter to 'test the juice' and wire strippers to prep your cables. Let’s look at what should be in your toolbag before you head to your first job site.
Cables are the 'nerves' of your alarm system. To keep things simple, we use a universal color code so we never get confused about which wire does what. In this lesson, we’ll meet the 'Power Couple'—Red and Black—and the 'Messengers'—Yellow and Blue—and learn how they work together in your wiring harness to carry power and information.
If the cables are the nerves, the Control Panel is the central 'Brain' where everything connects. When you open that metal box, you’ll see a row of green screw terminals. Don't be intimidated! Each one has a specific label, like a reserved parking spot for your wires. We’re going to walk through these terminals so you know exactly where every wire belongs.
Now it's time to get hands-on. We need to find a 'home' for the Brain and the Face (Keypad). We also need to mount our Power Supply safely. We’ll show you how to securely mount these and route your cables neatly so your installation looks professional and stays easy to service later.
A security system is only as good as what it can 'see, hear and tell.' In this lesson, we’ll mount our Magnetic Contacts, our PIR 'eyes' in the corners of rooms and our siren. We'll also cover the golden rules of placement—like why PIRs hate sunny windows and air conditioners—to make sure your system doesn't suffer from annoying false alarms.
It’s the moment of truth! We’ve wired everything up, and now it’s time to 'wake up' the system. We follow a safe power-up sequence and perform a series of functional tests to verify that every door contact and motion sensor is communicating perfectly with the Brain.
Being a professional means knowing how to fix 'hiccups' when things don't go perfectly. In this final lesson, we will go through the full troubleshooting guide to solve common installation issues and review the mandatory safety rules every installer must follow.
