Lesson 2.1: Site Survey & Identifying Coverage Zones

  1. Introduction to Pre-Installation Site Surveys

Conduct a site survey, identify coverage zones & blind spots and plan the cable routes. This is your initial ‘check list” before installation and mounting hardware.

  • Identify Coverage Zones & Blind Spots: Locate key areas that require monitoring and determine any blind spots that need to be addressed

  • Identify Vulnerable Access Points: Find high-risk entry or exit points that require dedicated surveillance

  • Evaluate Lighting Conditions: Check light levels (including areas requiring night vision or IR illumination) to choose appropriate camera locations and settings

  • Check Mounting Surfaces: Assess the structural stability of surfaces where cameras will be mounted

  • Identify Cable Routes: Plan out the physical paths for coaxial or network cabling from the camera locations back to the recorder/power source

  • Determine Power Source Locations: Locate where electrical power is available for the recorder, PoE switches, or camera power supply boxes
